Sustainability

At CFAO Equipment SA we strive for excellence in all that we do and accomplish this by operating in a socially, ethically and environmentally responsible manner. We see sustainability as the development and adoption of business strategies and activities that meet the needs of the business and our ever-evolving customers and associated stakeholders – all while protecting, sustaining, and enhancing human and natural resources for the benefit of future generations.

We are guided by the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle to achieve our goals, all of which provide an opportunity for us to strive for continuous improvement across all operating platforms.

We monitor the use of our resources and ensure that our operations do not have a negative impact on the environment. Additionally, our environmental footprint for electricity, water, fuels and oils usage is reported and monitored monthly. Our environmental initiatives are aimed at reducing usage and implementing sustainable solutions in the long term. CFAO Equipment SA is both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accredited.

Our Safety value principle of ‘Zero Harm’ is key to driving responsible employee behaviour, and the ethos ‘Think Safe, Work Safe, Home Safe’ is an integral part of our safety philosophy.

Carbon Footprint

We monitor the use of our resources to ensure that our operations do not have a negative impact on the environment. As such, the pending legislation around Carbon Tax provides a clear directive that we must continue to apply to further reduce our carbon footprint.

As a company, we have identified three key areas to reduce carbon emission for electricity, water and waste. Furthermore, our pledge to reduce, reuse and recycle is an important initiative that our employees implement across their projects in conjunction with their green team champions.

The Go Green competition held in 2011 created a platform to embed the principles on environmental impacts and what we need to do to reduce our environmental risk. In our last financial year we have managed to separate 8.6 tonnes of waste mainly through paper recycling. We partner with our suppliers to assist in the education of our employees on product usage. The ongoing partnership with Food and Trees for Africa, that includes the participation of our staff, have resulted in over 500 trees being planted regionally at disadvantaged schools throughout South Africa.

One of such initiatives is the recycling of waste streams. The efforts from employees have resulted in 8.6 tonnes of waste, mainly through paper recycling being achieved this year. In collaboration with suppliers, we focus on the training of employees on how to separate waste at source. The monitoring of energy, through fuels and electricity is ongoing. We have recently launched Digipen, a forms processing solution which will have a positive environmental benefit through the reduced use of paper and future efficiencies will be realised through fuel and energy savings.

Our divisional Energy Reduction Competition has been launched in March this year and our goal is to reduce our use of electricity and fuels by 10% across the business units. Our UK operations are ISO 9001 accredited and received their ISO 14001 certification for the Corby site in June this year. Our SA operations in KwaZulu – Natal have followed suit and will receive accreditation later this year. The Quality Management Systems framework will further enhance our objectives of ensuring legal compliance and continuous improvements in our operating practices.

CFAO Equipment SA Transformation

Our business success is dependent on our people. That’s why we have established a company-wide Human Capital framework, made up of people-related philosophies, policies and processes. Our talent strategy and pipelines are instrumental to our future business growth and success. Annually, we strive to increase our human capital capabilities by between 10% to 15% through skills development initiatives. These range from apprenticeships, learnerships and internship programmes, to leadership, customer and sales management training. CFAO Equipment SA recognises the importance of Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) and fully supports the principles of transformation. Our Transformation and Employment Equity Plans are progressive, and focus on improving the numerical goals and targets for underrepresented demographics, notably African Males and African and Coloured Females in the next Employment Equity Plan cycle. Our aim is to develop effective leadership and empowered people who will continue to have the perspective, energy and related skills to build and strengthen relationships with our customers and other stakeholders. CFAO Equipment SA currently has a level 2 rating BBBEE Score.

Socio-Economic Development

With the current technical skills shortages in South Africa, CFAO Equipment SA embarked on a sustainable talent solution through our ‘Project Phakamisa’ which started in 2012. Primarily focusing on the youth and targeting Technical and Agricultural High Schools, we have been actively involved in sponsoring students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, namely 10 schools within the Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Bloemfontein areas.

Our aim is to bring successful learners in our Apprentice Program and after the required period, they become qualified artisans, further uplifting our South African communities. Some 130+ students have passed through this Program and 40+ have been inducted into Project Phakamisa.
